Alipay overseas transactions spike 30% amidst new year festivities
Singapore registered the fastest growth of 56% YoY.
Alipay’s overseas transactions rose 30% year-on-year (YoY), driven by visa-free policies and expanding digital payment options during the Chinese New Year festivities from 28 to 30 January.
Singapore saw the highest growth, with total Alipay spending increasing by 56% YoY, followed by Japan at 40% YoY, supported by relaxed visa policies and a weaker yen.
Malaysia, Hong Kong SAR, and South Korea were also amongst the top five destinations. Long-haul travel rebounded, with transactions in Europe rising 30% YoY.
Popular destinations included the UK, France, and Italy, whilst Switzerland, Austria, and Turkey saw growing interest.
Chinese tourists increasingly sought local experiences beyond shopping and entertainment. Alipay transactions in cosmetic surgery rose by 449% YoY, whilst spending on food increased by 33% YoY for meals, 36% YoY for snacks, and 54% YoY for desserts.
Transportation spending on buses, subways, and ride-hailing grew by 139% YoY.
Between 28 January 28 and 1 February, Alipay transactions from foreign visitors increased by 150% YoY, with spending from visa-free countries up 200% YoY.
