Australia’s CommBank enables e-Passports for bank account opening
Around 700,000 new customers join the bank yearly.
New customers of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank or CBA) can now open a bank account using a single scan of their e-Passport in the CommBank app.
The service uses the same technology at airport gates, CBA said in an online announcement. Customers will be able to verify their identity digitally using the e-Passport and a biometric face scan.
Around 700,000 new customers join CBA each year, and 99% of its customer interactions now take place digitally, the bank said.
In-branch support remains available for customers who don’t have an NFC-enabled passport or compatible device, or for those who prefer face‑to‑face assistance.
