Credit Bureau and Experian Malaysia sign credit reporting MoU

Credit Bureau Singapore and Experian Malaysia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a two-way cross-border credit reporting service between Singapore and Malaysia.

The collaboration will support consented cross-border credit report applications for individuals with financial footprints in either country.

The initiative aims to improve financial inclusion, strengthen credit risk assessment, and support economic integration between the two markets.

Under the MoU, both parties intend to enable the structured and secure exchange of individual credit information between Singapore and Malaysia.

The proposed framework will define the roles of the source bureau and processing bureau, mechanisms for obtaining consumer consent, data protection safeguards, and governance models for implementation.

The service is expected to help consumers access financial products by allowing lenders to consider verified credit histories from across the border.

It may benefit digital-native workers, entrepreneurs, and professionals whose financial footprints span both jurisdictions.

Credit Bureau Singapore and Experian Malaysia said the framework could also help ensure cross-border consumers are assessed more fairly, rather than being treated as new-to-credit applicants when they move between the two countries.

For financial institutions, access to cross-border credit data could provide a more complete view of an applicant’s financial obligations, supporting stronger underwriting and reduced cross-border fraud risk.

Both parties said data protection, regulatory compliance, and consumer consent will be central to the initiative.
