CommBank tests AI banking assistant in app pilot

CommBank Companion will use live data to deliver financial info to customers.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank or CBA) has begun testing CommBank Companion, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered conversational service.

The service, planned to be rolled out in the CommBank app, will enable customers to ask questions and be prompted to act or can act through CommBank Companion, according to a CommBank online post on 26 May.

It will use live data to deliver information to the customers, whether for everyday spending, home buying, or running a business, the bank said.

CommBank Companion is currently being tested with employees and a select group of business banking customers. It will be rolled out in the CommBank app.

The CommBank app is used by 9 million customers every day, according to Angus Sullivan, group executive retail banking services.

“CommBank Companion is our response—bringing together live spending and saving data into a single experience, so customers can be better informed and manage their money, and act with confidence,” Sullivan said.

In 2025, CommBank rolled out AI-powered bots to intercept scammers and study scam attacks.
