Hong Kong credit card values up 8.4% to $34.91b in Q1

The number of debit card transactions fell although the value rose.

A total of 21.88 million credit cards are in circulation in Hong Kong as of Q1 2025, according to data from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA).

Over 332.44 million credit card transactions were recorded in the first three months of the year, with a total value of approximately $34.91b (HK$274.1b), a 1% increase from the previous quarter, and 8.4% higher than in Q1 2024.

Of that value, $23.7b (HK$186.1b) was related to retail spending in Hong Kong, $10.06b (HK$79b) was on overseas retail spending, and $1.15b (HK$9b) were cash advances.

For debit cards, the total number of transactions fell by 1.8% to 54.48 million, whilst the total value rose 1.1% to $9.4b (HK$73.8b).
