
HKMA warns public of online scams targeting local banks
The Bank of East Asia reported fake websites and internet banking login screens.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a warning to the public about several fraudulent online scams involving local banks.
According to the HKMA, The Bank of East Asia, Limited reported fake websites and internet banking login screens, Welab Bank Limited warned of a fraudulent website and mobile app, whilst The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) reported phishing instant messages targeting its customers.
The authority reminded the public that banks do not send SMS or emails containing embedded links directing users to banking websites for transactions.
The HKMA advised anyone who has shared personal information or made financial transactions in connection with these scams to immediately contact the relevant bank using the details in its press release and report the incident to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre at 2860 5012.
