Overall loan demand in India to “moderate” in Jan-Mar 2025: survey

Terms and conditions for the mining sector are expected to become stricter.

Bankers in India expect overall loan demand conditions to “moderate” for the Q4 2024-2025 or the January-March 2025 period, according to a central bank survey.

Easy loan terms and conditions are expected to prevail during the quarter except for the mining sector, where some tightening is expected, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in a survey released on 7 February 2025.

This follows an increase in credit demand in all broad sectors except retail or personal loans in the Q3 2024-2025 period, or October - December 2024.

Terms and conditions of loans to the mining sector have also tightened during the Q3 period, the RBI found.

Looking ahead, for Q1 2025-2026 (April - June 2025), Indian bankers expect “seasonal moderation” in loan growth across all sectors. Demand is expected to pick up in Q2 2025-2026.
