ANZ global headquarters gets environmental recognition

ANZ today announced the official opening of its global headquarters, ANZ Centre, in Melbourne’s Docklands precinct.

The building was opened by John Brumby, Premier of Victoria and ANZ Chairman Charles Goode. Also present was Minister for Finance and Deregulation and Federal Member for Melbourne, Lindsay Tanner.

Situated alongside the Yarra River, on Melbourne’s Collins Street, the building – which today achieved a 6 Star Green Star Office Design V2 rating from the Green Building Council of Australia - will house about 6,500 of ANZ’s people.

The building will produce 70 percent less greenhouse gas emissions, generate much of its own electricity using the on-site gas-fired tri-generation plant, solar cells and wind turbines and use about 50 per cent less potable water than a standard Australian commercial building.

Sustainability features also include black water recycling, rainwater harvesting, and an underfloor air-conditioning system that uses cool water from the Yarra to reduce demand on the cooling towers.

ANZ Chief Executive Officer Mike Smith said: “This move is historic because it marks a new era for ANZ.

“This new building, and our new logo, symbolise our aspiration to be Asia Pacific’s leading super regional bank.

“It also emphasises our renewed focus on putting our customers at the centre of all we do and demonstrates our commitment to Australia and to Melbourne,” Mr. Smith said.

ANZ Centre’s 6 Star Green Star certification was presented by Tony Arnel, Chair of the Green Building Council of Australia and Chair of the World Green Building Council.
