Taiwanese banks’ loan volumes and NPLs rise inch up in January

Coverage ratio is 914.33%, a 3.1 ppt decline from December 2025.

Banks in Taiwan saw their outstanding loans and bad loans increase in January 2026, although the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio remained the same.

Outstanding loans extended by 38 domestic banks rose by $15.35b (NT$483b) during the month, whilst the NPLs totalled $2.14b (NT$67.27b), higher by $0.03b (NT$0.84b) than the previous month.

Average NPL ratio was 0.15%, the same as December 2025, but 0.01 percentage point (ppt) lower than January 2025.

Coverage ratios of allowances for NPLs decreased 3.1 ppt to 914.33% compared to a month earlier.
