Hear the story behind DBS's digital transformation

Trevor Cheung, Managing Director of Ecosystems, Group Technology and Operations, will share the secrets to the bank's digital dominance.

As Managing Director of Ecosystems, Group Technology and Operations at DBS Bank, Trevor Cheung is responsible for spearheading the bank’s efforts in ecosystem technology strategies and solutions, API platforms and institutional banking digital channel assets.

With a wealth of experience in business and technology leadership, Cheung specialises in digital and technology transformation. He firmly believes that engineering must be led by the needs of customers and the business, for which he adopts a diverse set of expertise, including customer experience management, cloud computing, enterprise architecture, platform business strategy, design thinking, Agile and DevOps.

Trevor graduated with first class honours from University College London and an MBA from China Europe International Business School.

Asian Banking & Finance sat down with Cheung to talk about the basic requirements that can help banks stay competitive in today’s digital economy.

What are your previous experiences and positions held that contributed to who you are as a banker/expert today?

Over my 24 years of working experience, I have been in numerous roles covering strategy, standards and industry development, ecosystems management, business development, product management, software development, technology operations and digital transformation. My extensive background has prepared me to work with experts from different fields and understand their challenges. This has been crucial in helping me thrive at DBS, where I interact with colleagues from different backgrounds and levels.

What would you say are the best practices and digital strategies deployed by the region's digitally dominant banks? Where does open banking fit in this agenda and how should banks capture the opportunities from this growing ecosystem?

Design thinking, Agile, DevOps and continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) are some of the many best practices. Digital strategies today revolve around AI, big data, blockchain, cloud computing, and microservice architecture to ensure a shorter time to market, scalability, flexibility and more secure transactions. These are basic requirements to have in order to compete in the banking landscape today. Increasingly, banks are leveraging technology such as APIs to better collaborate with clients and ecosystem partners.

Can you give us a glimpse of what you will share at the ABF Digital & Open Banking Conference 2019?
