Digital wallets capture 77% of APAC e-commerce payments

Mobile checkout tools made up 63% of in-store spending across the region.

Digital wallets accounted for the majority of payments in Asia-Pacific (APAC) in 2025, making up 77% of e-commerce transaction value and 63% of point-of-sale (POS) spending, according to the Global Payments Report 2026 report by Worldpay.

The region was the first to see widespread adoption of digital payments both online and in physical stores, and it continues to lead globally in wallet usage. 

Although overall figures are heavily influenced by China and India, adoption is now widespread across APAC. 

QR code payments remain a key driver of wallet use, particularly at POS.

Direct account-to-account (A2A) payments made up a smaller share of transactions, accounting for 5% of e-commerce value and 4% of POS spending in 2025. 

Despite this, A2A payments play an important role in several markets due to the growth of national fast payment systems. 

These include Faster Payment System in Hong Kong, BI-FAST in Indonesia, DuitNow in Malaysia, PromptPay in Thailand and NAPAS in Vietnam, where A2A payments represent a meaningful and growing share of both online and in-store transactions.

Cash remains in use across the region, accounting for 13% of POS spending in 2025, whilst cash on delivery (COD) represented 2% of e-commerce transactions. 

Usage varies widely between markets. Cash accounted for 4% of POS payments in China and 6% in both Hong Kong and South Korea. 

In contrast, it remained significantly higher in Indonesia at 36%, Japan at 38%, and the Philippines at 42%, the highest level reported.

Southeast Asia continues to record the highest use of cash on delivery globally, with double-digit shares of online transactions in Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
