Alipay, KakaoPay,  Touch ‘n Go, GCash and TrueMoney are the most popuar.

Alipay+ says that it has now connected 2 million merchants in Japan to 16 e-wallets and banks.

Accepted digital payment platforms include: Alipay (Chinese mainland), AlipayHK (Hong Kong SAR China), MPay (Macao SAR China), South Korea’s Kakao Pay, Naver Pay and Toss, Singapore’s OCBC Digital, Changi Pay and EZ-Link, Malaysia’s Touch ‘n Go eWallet and MyPB by Public Bank Berhad, the Philippines’ GCash and HelloMoney, TrueMoney (Thailand), Hipay (Mongolia), and Tinaba (Italy).

This helped in driving transaction volumes made by e-wallets and banks in Japan to rise threefold (over 200%) in the first three weeks of March, compared to the same period in 2023, Alipay+ said in a press release.

In terms of value, digital payments made by apps accounted for 10% of total spending amongst users during their stay in Japan, said Douglas Feagin, president of Ant International.

The most popular e-wallets used were Alipay, AlipayHK, Kakao Pay, Touch ‘n  Go eWallet, GCash, and TrueMoney.

MPay, NaverPay, and Toss are also seeing rapid growth in transactions, Alipay said.
