
Indonesians can now pay with national standard QR in Japan
They can use QRIS to pay in Japanese merchants scanning the JPQR.
Indonesians can now make QR code payments in Japan using the QRIS through participating merchants scanning the JPQR.
QR code connectivity between the two countries was launched on 17 August 2025.
“I hope that with this implementation, we can realize a future where the exchange of goods and services between Japan and Indonesia becomes increasingly dynamic, leading to shared progress and prosperity,” said Katsunobu Kato, Japan’s Minister of Finance.
This initiative complements the local currency transaction (LCT) cooperation between Indonesia and Japan, which was agreed in 2019 and has been implemented since 2020, according to a press release. The rupiah–yen settlement scheme enables trade and investment to be conducted without relying on third-party currencies, thereby reducing foreign exchange conversion costs.
