Commercial banks seize 45% of Thailand’s total financial assets

Depository corporations like savings cooperatives trail far behind with 6.8% share.

Commercial banks remain the central pillar of Thailand’s financial landscape, accounting for 45.3% of the total asset size within the financial institution system, data from the Bank of Thailand as of the second quarter 2025 showed.

Currently, 28 commercial banks operate in the country, significantly outperforming other depository corporations such as specialised financial institutions (SFIs), which hold a 16.2% asset share, and savings cooperatives at 6.8%.In the lending market, commercial banks hold a commanding lead in corporate loans with a 67% market share.

Their influence in the consumer loan sector is also substantial at 41%, though they face more competition here from SFIs and savings cooperatives, which hold 24% and 18% of the market, respectively.

Within the commercial banking sector itself, asset distribution is led by Bangkok Bank PCL at 17%, followed closely by Krung Thai Bank PCL and Kasikorn Bank PCL, both at 15%.

The funding structure of these banks relies heavily on deposits, which make up the largest portion of their liabilities.

On the asset side, lending is the primary activity, supported by investments in debt securities and smaller holdings in cash and equity.

Outside of traditional banking, the broader financial system includes a high volume of mutual funds, numbering 2,260, which represent 9.4% of total assets, and 70 insurance companies holding an 8.9% share.

Long-term trends show that Thailand’s total sources of funding reached approximately 50,000 billion baht by mid-2025.

Whilst the bond market and equity market provide significant funding, loans from commercial banks continue to be the most consistent and substantial source of capital for the Thai economy.

Smaller contributors to the system include leasing companies, provident funds, and the Government Pension Fund, which each hold between 1.9% and 2.7% of total assets.
