Which Indonesian banks are most exposed to Sumatra flooding?
BRI has the largest absolute exposure whilst BRIS has high exposure, UOBKH said.
Bank Syariah Indonesia (BRIS) and Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) are expected to be amongst financial institutions (FI) most affected by floods in Sumatra, Indonesia, according to estimates by UOB Kay Hian (UOBKH).
BRIS and BRI reportedly carry the largest exposure to the affected areas, with Bank Mandiri following at a smaller scale, said UOBKH analyst Posmarito Pakpahan.
“BRIS has the highest proportional exposure as Aceh’s fully Syariah-compliant market makes it the dominant lender across retail, micro, and SME segments,” Pakpahan wrote in a report on 10 December 2025.
But BRI has the largest absolute exposure given its extensive micro and ultra-micro franchise across rural Sumatra, he said.
Bank Negara Malaysia and Bank Central Asia face minimal direct impact given that their exposure is heavily in corporate and Java loan portfolios.
Overall, the banking sector’s exposure is estimated at 5%, and risk is manageable, Pakpahan said.
Aggregate loan exposure to the three provinces is modest at 4.9% of system loans, with deposit exposure even lower at 4.6%, UOBKH said.
“As the worst damage is concentrated in only a few districts, effective credit exposure to the most affected areas is significantly below headline figures. Accordingly, the event is unlikely to cause any meaningful liquidity disruption for the banking system,” Pakpahan said.
